James Horn is a leading historian of early Virginia history.  In this book he relates the fascinating and convoluted story of the ill-fated 1598 English attempt to establish a colony in the New World.  The settlement on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina disappeared along with it's 100 inhabitants - men, women and children. Horn recounts the colony's travails including hostilities with the natives and requests to England for support that failed to arrive for three years by which time the settlers had vanished.  Based on the available evidence, Horn concludes that the colonists did not die but left and intermarried with the local Indians.  This is an outstanding historical mystery adventure tale.
