The first Africans to arrive in the New World arrived in Jamestown in 1619.  For the next forty years they were treated as servants, working alongside European indentured servants.  This all changed when the need for cheap labor increased.  By the end of the 1600's slavery became the law.  This book clearly presents the higory of slavery from 1619 to 1865.  Illustrations, a glossery and a timeline all add to the value of the book.
