In the American Revolution, Virginians were the most eloquent spokemen for freedom and equality.  George Washington led the army.  Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration and the Constituion as well as the Bill of Rights.  They were also slave-holders. This book is a study of the tragic contradiction at the core of America and finds the key to the paradox in the people and politics of the state that was both the birthplace of the Revolution and the largest slaveholding state in the nation.
