Mukambu of Ndongo is an extremely well written children's book that tells the story of the arrival of the first recorded Africans to the New World at Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Mukambu is the tale of a young West Central African girl who arrived with that first group. As she thinks back on her life, she tells her granddaughter about her life in Africa, her arrival in Virginia and the life she has lived in this strange new world.
